About Positive Vibrations
Bringing people together in Woking and the surrounding area through the unifying power, rich heritage, and uplifting energy of traditional West African drumming.
About me
Hi, I’m Dave, the founder of Positive Vibrations. My journey with the djembe began over 25 years ago when a few friends and I first picked up the drum.
We were incredibly fortunate to study under Eliza Dickie, during an amazing time when she was involved in bringing West African masters like Mamady Keïta, Famoudou Konaté and other greats to the UK for workshops and performances.
Although the rhythms are an ever changing language, with so many variations similar to local dialects, Eliza taught rhythms that were standardized by Mamady Keïta at that time. She also performed regularly, playing dunduns alongside these legends and other greats. We were immediately hooked. We became dedicated students, captivated by how the energetic, layered patterns fit together to create such powerful, uplifting grooves.
For years, we immersed ourselves in learning more, discovering that these complex rhythms are beautifully complemented with traditional singing and dance. We became more fascinated by the rhythms and ceremonies, songs and dance steeped in tradition and so often part of every day village life.
After a more recent rekindling of that original spark, and realising my passion was stronger than ever, I began Positive Vibrations to create a friendly, welcoming space where others can practice and learn the incredibly rich tapestries that these West African instruments weave.
Over the years, my love for the drum has combined perfectly with another love for arts and crafts, this naturally led me to work on the drums. What started out of necessity - learning to reskin and re-rope my own and friends drums - over the years has evolved into a deeper understanding.
Today, I build, repair, and service these versatile instruments, keeping the music alive from the inside out.

Community, connection, and wellbeing
You don't need any musical experience to take part. I am not a West Africa rhythm guru buy any stretch, but I am deeply enthusiastic and passionate about sharing these authentic rhythms in a relaxed, friendly environment.
Meeting at Woking Spiritualist Church and outdoors in Woking Park during summer, our regular drum circles are all about reconnecting, recharging your spirit, having fun, and feeling unified with those around you.
Spare drums are always available to borrow if you don't have your own.

Dedicated drum servicing and sales
Alongside our community circles, Positive Vibrations provides meticulous drum building and maintenance, re-heading, tuning, and sales. With an eye for detail that is second to none, each instrument is cared for using the best quality materials available.
